Honouring The Legacy Of Argyle
Handling a pink diamond in one’s hand is like nothing else. In 37 years, the Argyle mine in Western Australia has produced 865 million carats of rough diamonds, forming about 90% of the world’s pink diamonds. In November 2020, the mine was officially closed.
As this chapter closes, another begins. As part of the dedication to ensuring these diamonds are sourced ethically and responsibility, Argyle has begun to rehabilitate the land back to their traditional custodians. The mine will likely be transformed into a place for trees and wildlife to grow, an environmental endeavour that will take place over the coming years.
Natural Pink Diamonds At Their Finest
To give you the confidence you have a truly authentic and quality investment, the GIA outlines Diamond Quality Factors in-depth and your purchase comes with a Certificate of Authenticity. The colour of pink diamonds range from soft and pale to intense and radiant hues. Unlike other coloured diamonds, whose hue originates from impurities, it’s caused by a distortion in the crystals lattice due to intense heat and pressure during its formation.
Even small imperfections can significantly affect the diamond value, so it is important to understand the grading of your pink diamond in regards to these categories.
Each pink diamond is carefully graded by using the four C’s — Colour, Cut, Clarity and Carat — the four main components of a diamond’s beauty and structure.
Colour
Australian Argyle Pink Diamonds have a distinctly radiant depth of pink colour that’s rarely found in pink diamonds from other countries which are more pale. In order to grade them more accurately, Argyle Mine developed their own colour grading scale. Every diamond will have a unique colour profile, but the broad categories are purplish pink, pink, pink rose, pink champagne, blue violet and red.
Colour is the main factor that affects the price of pink diamonds, with deep vivid colours commanding significantly higher prices and appreciating over time.
Cut
The true brilliance of a diamond is reflected in the cut. A superbly cut diamond will reflect light at every angle and every facet to create its renowned sparkle. Nowadays, lasers are often used to cut diamonds because they create an extremely precise cut and allow for exacting standards, even for complicated cuts. Common diamond shape cuts include round, oval, pear, emerald, marquise and cushion.
Clarity
Like all things from nature, a diamond is rarely perfect. Clarity refers to the number of internal inclusions and surface blemishes, which often occur in a natural substance such as diamonds. The fewer inclusions, the better a diamond’s clarity and inherent beauty. No two diamonds have the same inclusions, so they can be used to help identify individual stones. The grading scale goes Flawless, Internally Flawless, VVS1, VVS2, VS1, VS2, SI1, SI2, I1, I2, I3 with each describing progressively lower clarity.
Carat
Carat refers to the weight of the diamond — 1 carat is equivalent to 200 milligrams, or 0.2 grams. Depending on the cut and shape of the diamond, the size of 1 carat diamonds can vary. Whilst carat is an important factor, the overall appearance and brilliance are more important. For example, a mediocre 1.5-carat diamond will not gain as much attention as a stronger coloured or better clarity 1-carat diamond.
Another point to note about the exclusivity of pink diamonds is 90% of all cut and polished Australian Argyle pink diamonds are smaller than 0.20 carat in size, with the exclusive 10% grossing the most investment returns.
