The Diamond Grading Process
The Australian diamond industry adheres to internationally recognised standards laid out by institutions such as the International Diamond Council (IDC), the World Jewellery Confederation (CIBJO), and the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). These standards define a four-step approach to diamond grading, known as the “4Cs”.
Carat Weight
Measured in carats, this refers to the diamond’s physical weight, directly impacting its size and price.
Cut
This encompasses the proportions, symmetry, and polish of the diamond, significantly influencing its brilliance and fire.
Clarity
Graded on a scale from flawless to heavily included, this assesses the presence of internal blemishes or imperfections.
Colour
Diamonds range from colourless (D) to light yellow (Z), with whiter diamonds typically commanding higher prices. Fancy coloured diamonds, such as pink, yellow and chocolate diamonds, are graded differently however. According to the GIA, coloured diamonds are graded in order of increasing colour strength, from Faint, Very Light, Light, Fancy Light and Fancy to Fancy Intense, Fancy Vivid, Fancy Dark and Fancy Deep. Fancy Intense and Fancy Vivid generally carry higher prices.
