Coloured diamonds get their hues from trace elements that are present during their formation. Specific elements cause specific colours – for example, nitrogen causes the colour in yellow diamonds, and boron causes the colour in blue diamonds. When it comes to pink diamonds, however, none of these trace elements have been found! This has led scientists to speculate that the colour may have resulted from some kind of seismic shock that altered the stone’s molecular structure.
